Michael and Liv are sitting side by side at the counter in a bar.

ミハエル：
いや〜きみがパチスロにはまってたなんて、びっくりだよ。で、もうかったの？なんてね それにしても、ほんとに心配したよ。でも無事でなによりだ |
Michael: I was really astonished to hear that you were into Pachisuro. So, did you hit the jackpot? oh, I'm just joking. Even so, I was really worried. I'm relieved to know that you're OK now. |
リヴ：
ごめんなさい。わたし、どうかしてたの これまでの人生、順風満帆だった。小さいころから神童と言われて育ち、全米屈指の名門コロリン大学を成績優秀者賞を受賞して卒業、そのまま青田買いされて就職…。 仕事もガムシャラにがんばったわ。夜１０時をまわって目が血走ろうが、ほうれい線が刻みこまれようが、おかまいなしだった でもね、ロドリゲス社長が会社を去ってしまったでしょ。それ以来、急に仕事に対する情熱がなくなってしまったの。まるで張り詰めてた糸がぷつんと切れたみたいに |
Liv: I'm sorry for all the mess. I was out of mind. I've always been successful and was able to sail through anything in my life. From my childhood, I was raised as a child prodigy and everyone called me so. I graduated summa cum laude from Colorin University, one of the best universities in the entire U.S. Then, I received a job offer from the firm before I had even graduated..... I worked frantically to show what I had. It might even have been 10 p.m., and my eyes were bloodshot, or I had furrows on my face, but I never cared what I looked like. However, Mr. Rodriguez left the firm, and since then I suddenly lost passion for work. It was like a strained rope had snapped all of sudden. |
ミハエル：
きみはロドリゲス前社長に頼りにされてたからね… |
Michael: I know because Mr. Rodriguez, the former president, always relied on you.... |
リヴ：
わたしとは反対で、あなたは順調そのものね。部長昇進おめでとう |
Liv: In contrast to me, everything is going all right with you, isn't it? Congratulations on getting promoted to manager. |
ミハエル：
部長なんて、上と下の板ばさみだよ。中間管理職の悲哀ってやつさ おれね、毎朝、精神統一するのが日課なんだ。小一時間ばかり こう、じっと目をつむって、腕組して「とくダネ！」を聞くんだ。これをやらないと、どうにも会社に行く勇気が出ないんだよ。てか、あきらめがつかないっていうか。「仕方ない。そろそろ行くとするか…」ってね ところがさ、部長になってから、この精神統一が１時間じゃすまなくなったんだ。最近は、軽く２時間はじっと目をつむってるね |
Michael: As manager, nothing is easy; you're pulled in both directions between the bosses and the subordinates. I'm feeling the melancholy that all mid-level executives have, you know. I make it rule to do some mental concentration every day. Just for an hour or so. Like this, I close my eyes and listen to "Tokudane!", crossing my arms. If I don't do this, I can't somehow summon up the courage to go to work. Or, I simply can't reconcile myself to going to work. So I tell myself , "No way out. I've got to go now....." However, since I became the manager, one-hour mental concentration has been barely enough. Lately, I close my eyes for at least two hours or so. |
リヴ：
そんな暇があったら、ベッドで寝たほうがいいんじゃない？ |
Liv: If you can spare the time to do that, wouldn't it be better to go to bed? |
ミハエル：
あは、あはははは。いや、まったくだ。そのとおりだよ、リヴ おほん… リヴ…。いきなりこんなこというのもあれなんだけど、いまがちょうどいい機会だと思って… |
Michael: Aha, ahahahahaha. Yeah, right. Exactly, Liv. Ahem.... Liv, I know it's awkward to tell you this all of sudden, but I think now is the right time to tell you what I'm thinking... |
リヴ：
え？なに？なんのこと？ |
Liv: Ah? What? What do you mean? |
ミハエル：
おれ、もうちょっとしたら、会社をやめようと思ってるんだ |
Michael: I am thinking of leaving the firm soon. |
リヴ：
えええ！？会社をやめる！！？ |
Liv: Whaaaat!? You're leaving the firm!!? |
ミハエル： 実はさ、実家の弁当屋を継ごうと思ってるんだ おほん… リヴ。ぼくと結婚を前提にお付き合いしてくれませんか？ |
Michael: To tell the truth, I am thinking of taking over the lunch box business which my family runs in my hometown. Ahem.... Liv. Will you be my girlfriend with a view to marriage? |
