ビッグバン★セオリー 第１話「オタク、美女に遭遇！」

I’ll be honest. When I first saw “The Big Bang Theory” I wasn’t immediately hooked. I thought a few of the jokes fell a little flat and that the show tried to force a certain feigned intellectualism. In fact, in some youtube clips of the show with the laugh track removed, it can sometimes be down right cringe-worthy.

正直に言って、はじめてこの『The Big Bang Theory』を観たときにすぐ「いい！」と感じたわけではないです。ギャグは寒いし、インテリ気取りが鼻につくしで。実は、「録音笑い」を抜いてあるyoutubeの動画を観たら、もう寒すぎて死ぬレベル！

However, there’s a reason why “The Big Bang Theory” has been hailed as the best sitcom since “Friends.” Four comedy veterans take on the roles of genius nerds whose orbits repeatedly fall out of alignment as a beautiful new neighbor introduces them to a world far afield of academia. Replete with geeky pop-culture references, unexpected cameos, and even some space travel, this show grew on me quickly.

しかし、『The Big Bang Theory』が『Friends』以来の最高の連続ホームコメディとしてもてはやされるのには理由があります。4人のベテランコメディアンが演じる天才的頭脳を持ったオタクたちが、隣に引っ越して来た美女にたびたび誘惑されては、そのたびについついお勉強の道を踏み外してしまうんですね（笑）。オタク系ポップカルチャーがふんだんに出てくるし、予想外のカメオ出演や、宇宙旅行シーンまであって、すぐにハマってしまいました。

I also think this show is a great choice for Japanese learners of English. Though the characters often refer to difficult scientific jargon, the jokes often stem from that very obscurity (even most native English speakers would be hard-pressed to understand everything the show offers).

しかもこの作品、英語を勉強している日本人にとっても良い番組です。俳優達はよく複雑な科学の専門用語を話すんですが、これには、ジョークを解釈する難しさと通じるところがあります。（ほとんどの英語のネイティブスピーカーも当番組の全部のセリフを理解するのはかなり大変でしょう）

In episode one, Penny takes a shower in the boys apartment and convinces Leonard and Sheldon to try to get her TV back from her ex-boyfriend. Somehow, they end up losing their pants.

エピソード１の中では、ペニーは男たちの部屋でシャワーして、レナードとシェルドンに元カレからPennyのテレビを返してもらおうとしています。その後、どういうわけか、二人とものズボンがなくなります（？？）。

In the following scene, Sheldon and Leonard meet their beautiful new neighbor Penny.

このシーンで、レナードとシェルドンは、初めてペニーに出会います。

Leonard: New neighbour?
新しいおとなりさん？

Sheldon: Evidently.
そのようだ。

Leonard: Significant improvement over the old neighbour.
前のおとなりさんから顕著な向上が見られるね。

Sheldon: Two hundred pound transvestite with a skin condition? Yes she is.
皮膚疾患のある200ポンドの女装趣味よりも？うん、それは間違いない。

Penny: Oh, hi!
あっ、ハロー！

Leonard: Hi.
ハロー！

Sheldon: Hi.
ハロー！

Leonard: Hi.
ハロー！

Sheldon: Hi.
ハロー！

Penny: Hi?
ハロー？

Leonard: We don’t mean to interrupt, we live across the hall.
すいませんお邪魔してしまって、僕たち、廊下の向こうに住んでるものです。

Penny: Oh, that’s nice.
まあ、いいわね！

Leonard: Oh… uh… no… we don’t live together… um… we live together but in separate, heterosexual bedrooms.
いや、あの、その、一緒じゃないというか、えっと･･･一緒に住んでいますが、ベッドは別々の異性愛者です。

Penny: Oh, okay, well, guess I’m your new neighbour, Penny.
ん？　とにかく、私は新しい隣人のペニーよ。

Leonard: Leonard, Sheldon.
レナード、シェルドン。

Penny: Hi.
はじめまして。

Leonard: Hi.
はじめまして。

Sheldon: Hi.
はじめまして。

Penny: Hi.
はじめまして。

Leonard: Hi. Well, uh, oh, welcome to the building.
はじめまして。えっと、あの、このビルにようこそ。

Penny: Thank you, maybe we can have coffee sometime.
ありがと、いつか、コーヒーでも。

Leonard: Oh, great.
お～、いいですね。

Penny: Great.
いいですね。

Sheldon: Great.
いいですね。

Leonard: Great. Well, bye.
いいですね。では、また。

Penny: Bye.
また。

Sheldon: Bye.
また。

Leonard: Bye.
また。

Leonard: Should we have invited her for lunch?
ランチに誘ったらよかったの？

Sheldon: No. We’re going to start season two of ”Battlestar Galactica.”
だめだ。バトルスターギャラクティカのシーズン2を観るんだから。
