The great east Japan earthquake happened at 14:46 on March 11th, 2011.
It was the most powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0.
It triggered powerful tsunami, and nuclear accidents:
the level 7 meltdown in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
15,889 people were killed, 6,152 were injured, and 2,601 are missing.
The figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who was 16 years old then, was practicing skating at Sendai Ice Rink, when the earthquake hit Japan.
He and his family were safe, but the Ice Rink was damaged heavily.
Yuzuru wondered if he can continue to skate, even though many people were suffering.
Eventually, he decided to skate to encourage people in Tohoku area.
In Sochi Olympics in February 2014, he won a gold medal.
Yuzuru said, “People in the stricken area supported me and gave me courage.
I want everyone to remember March 11th.
