Satoshi Omura has a unique academic career.
He initially worked as a science teacher at an industrial night high school aftergraduating from university.
Inspired and motivated by his students, who worked in the daytime and came to school to study earnestly at night, Omura himself made up his mind to go back to school to study again.
He earned doctoral degrees in pharmacy from the University of Tokyo,and in chemistry from the Tokyo University of Science.

Having worked as a researcher for the Kitasato Institute since 1965, he has devoted his career to biochemical research.
One day when he was collecting soil samples and extracting microbes from a golf course in Shizuoka, he succeeded in finding a type of bacteria, which later became the source of “avermectin”.
He is also known as an art lover. He donated over 200 million yen for construction cost to establish a museum in his hometown Nirasaki in Yamanashi prefecture.
He says in the website of the museum: “I believe good art is not for someone to enjoy individually, but something that should be shared by all people.”

大村智さんの経歴は一風変わっている。まず、大学卒業後の彼の最初の職業は、夜間高校の理科の教師だった。
この夜間学校で必死に勉強する生徒達の姿に、大きな感銘と刺激を受け、彼は大学院に入って学び直すことを決意したという。

後に東大で薬学、東京理科大で理学の博士号を取得している。
1965年から北里研究所にて微生物の研究を開始。静岡のゴルフ場で土を採集していた時、エヴァメクチンの元となるバクテリアを発見した。

美術愛好家としても知られている彼は、２億円以上を故郷の韮崎市に寄付し、美術館を建設。「美術は私個人が楽しむものではなく、皆さんと一緒に楽しむべきもの」と、自身の建てた美術館のホームページで述べている。
